![]() ![]() Cassette tape copies of these demos would be produced and distributed by Mantas's other guitarist, Charles "Evil Chuck" Schuldiner. The releases in question are both versions of the "Death by Metal" demo and a rehearsal tape known as "Rehearsal #3." Those 3 releases are all demos that were recorded via guitarist Frederick "Rick Rozz" Delillo's Panasonic boombox during Mantas's jam sessions. The Mantas "Death by Metal" compilation album put out by Relapse Records in 2012 compiles 3 releases from the band dating back to 1984. If you want to strike up a conversation about the band that started death metal, at least even the playing field by comparing Mantas and Possessed due to both bands having growled vocals and a significant amount of thrash influence in their sounds that would make arguing in one's favor equally as challenging as arguing in the other's favor. Just like Possessed, Mantas took thrash metal before it really exploded in popularity and kicked it into overdrive through increasing the speed, heaviness, and adding those throaty growls that would go to inspire countless bands that bare the title of being "death metal." The tracks on the Mantas "Death by Metal" compilation album masterfully exemplify this and act as a great way for metalheads both young and old to truly appreciate the history of death metal. I don't exactly know if the same can be said for Death's former moniker, Mantas. I feel the comparison of the 2 is genuinely unfair as Death had their sound pretty much locked in and refined. Very often I get tired of hearing the age old "Who started death metal?" argument that mainly compares 2 bands, Possessed and Death. ![]()
